Convocation 2011 - Question & Answers

What is Convocation?
Convocation is a college-wide ceremony to celebrate student achievement and success. It is not a graduation ceremony but rather a celebration for those students who may be eligible for graduation.


Timing?
Convocation will be on Friday June 3, 2011. There will be two ceremonies based on a equable split:

Ceremony 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (Awards Ceremony Included)
Portage College Gymnasium

Ceremony 2:30 pm - 4:00 p.m. (Awards Ceremony included)
Portage College Gymnasium

Who's eligible to attend Convocation?
Students who are eligible for graduation and whose program of studies will be completed in the 2010 - 2011 academic year (by June 30, 2011). Invitations will be sent in Feb/March to ACE students and career program students (main campus and community campuses) who are eligible to attend.

What about students who receive an invitation but withdraw from their studies before the ceremony?
The Registrar's Office will remove the names of withdrawn students from the eligible student list.

Will graduation be celebrated at the end of the program?
Convocation is a college-wide celebration of student achievement. Program areas have the individual choice of whether or not to celebrate student completion.

Where can I get more information about Convocation and/or sign up?
At the Student Services Centre. At Bonnyville, Cold Lake, St. Paul campuses, Student Services will be handling the sign-up of students.

Do I have to wear a cap and gown?
Yes, all students participating in the ceremony are expected to wear the cap, tassel and gown.

How much will it cost to attend?
There is no cost to the student as Convocation is a gift from the College to the Student. Students will be required to register at Student Services Centre to ensure cap, tassel and gown ordering. The cap and tassel are yours to keep after the ceremony.

Will I get my certificate (or diploma) at the ceremony?
No, you will receive a letter at the ceremony. Your certificate (or diploma) will be mailed to you at a later date.

1:00 p.m. Honor Ceremony (Theater)

The Awards Ceremony has now been combined with the Convocation Ceremony. The morning Ceremony will run from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon from 2:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held in the Portage College Gym.
