WebCat & Library of Congress Subject Headings

The WebCat is the Library's computerized catalogue. It is the listing of books, videos, and journals available in the Library. You can locate material on specific topics by performing a Subject Heading search. Portage College Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings.

Periodicals are published at regular intervals, generally more frequently than annually. Each issue is numbered and/or dated consecutively, and normally contains separate articles, stories, or other writings. Scanning current issues of periodicals in your subject area can be useful when you are trying to think of a topic.

Gale Databases (blue)

Academic OneFile has extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Updated daily.

Health Reference Centre Academic
Use this database to find articles on topics such as fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health and safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs, etc. Full-text articles are available.

Health and Wellness Resource Centre focuses on consumer health information and includes links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. Also provides “Drug Finder,” “Health Assessment Tools,” “Medical Encyclopedia,” etc. Full-text articles are available.

Nursing and Allied Health Database
All aspects of the Nursing profession -- from direct patient care to health care administration -- are covered in this collection. Including nearly 400 titles, this collection's current and authoritative content will be of use to both professionals already working in the field as well as students pursuing a nursing-focused curriculum.

EBSCO Databases (green)

Academic Search Complete is the world's most comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 5,500 full-text periodicals, including more than 4,600 peer-reviewed journals. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in searchable PDF format.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 560 journals indexed in CINAHL. Of those, nearly 400 have cover-to-cover indexing in CINAHL. With more than 600,000 full-text articles dating back to 1937, CINAHL Plus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of nursing and allied health literature.

Health Source Consumer is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source: Consumer Edition features searchable full text for nearly 150 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides access to over 550 scholarly journals including 450 peer-reviewed journals in nursing and allied health disciplines. Full-text articles are available.

MEDLINE contains abstracts from the US National Library of Medicine. This is the essential research database used by medical students, physicians and researchers. Only abstracts are provided.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Full-text articles are available.

The Internet is a rich source of material. The sites listed here are just a starting point. If you are looking for a specific topic, try typing keywords into one of the basic search tools such as Yahoo, AltaVista, Google, etc.

National Academy Press

Public Health Agency of Canada
Excellent starting point for any medical topic in Canada.

Statistics Canada
A variety of statistical data, including population traits and trends, justice and crime, government, and profiles of Canadian communities.

Virtual Hospital
A digital health sciences library created in 1992 at the University of Iowa. Aims to make the Internet a useful medical reference and health promotion tool for health care providers and patients.
