This weekend was a great way to end the ACAC 2017/18 curling season for our student-athlete Voyageurs. The Portage College mixed curling team played MacEwan University for gold in Camrose and unfortunately lost 7-5 in the 8th end. They walked away with a silver medal this year. This is the 2nd medal we have won in curling since 2013.
Friday, February 16 at the awards banquet Kyle Leach was chosen as All Conference mixed skip and Connor Nikipelo was chosen as All Conference mixed second by the Conference Coaches to the 2017-18 Curling All-Conference Teams.
Skip, Kyle Leach also won the Charles Morter Award. This award is dedicated to coach and supporter of ACAC curling. Presented annually to the college student who best exemplifies Morter's spirit, dedication, sportsmanship and leadership towards fellow curlers.
Portage College had curling from 2000 to 2011 and then was brought back in 2013/14 when we won the men's championship. Before that Portage Curling hasn't won a medal since 2005/06.
Congrats to Kyle Leach, Connor Nikipelo, Cassie Kotyk, Kayleigh Zacharuk, Mackenzie St. Denis and Coach Maurice Richard on your success this season.
"For not being on the same campus and around each other all the time this team got along really good. It was great to see the parents this weekend sitting with other parents watching their student athletes compete. This team had to be committed as we only had 3 on the ice at one time for practice so they had to get into the curling clubs in their communities and throw rocks as much as they could to stay sharp. We are very proud of this team bringing home a silver medal."
