Pembina Pipeline Corporation and its generous employees pumped more than $5,000 into Portage College's Spirit of Community Partnerships Endowment Fund earlier this month. The company hosted a tournament for employees and contractors at the Riverbank Golf Course in Wandering River Sept. 8, with individual players raising $2,735 by participating in various on-course games. Pembina then matched the amount, for a total donation of $5,470. This is the second year in a row that the company has raised money for the endowment fund, which focuses on community volunteerism.
"We are so grateful for Pembina's continued support of our Spirit of Community Partnerships Endowment," said Nancy Broadbent, Interim President and CEO of Portage College. "Their generosity will go a long way towards helping students achieve their dreams while giving back to their communities at the same time."
Kirk Sutherland, Manager Athabasca District, noted that Pembina believes that supporting education not only enhances opportunities for people to improve their quality of life but also provides the company with a potential source of trained and educated workers for their workforce. The donation to the Spirit of Community Partnerships Endowment also supports Pembina's initiatives aimed at community building.
"Giving back to our communities is part of our corporate culture here at Pembina," said Sutherland. "We're pleased to unite our employees and contractors through our annual Contractor Golf Tournament, and raise funds for important education programs."
The Spirit of Community Partnerships Endowment fund was created to encourage students to get involved and become engaged within the community through volunteerism, by being role models and contributing back to the community in meaningful ways. Students will be rewarded with Portage College scholarships in accordance with set eligibility criteria. The College's ultimate goal is to raise $1 million for the fund to ensure long-term sustainability.
