Portage Application to Host U of C BSW Program Rejected
December 15, 2017

Unfortunately Portage College was unsuccessful in the application to the University of Calgary (U of C) to host the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program for the 2019-20 academic year.

The U of C did recognize that there was a strong connection to available practicum sites in our area, along with significant demand for the program in our region. However, for U of C to ensure access to the BSW Program across the province, the application was approved for another institution.

"We thank the University of Calgary for considering our application," says Nancy Broadbent, Executive Vice President Academic of Portage College. "We will continue to work towards hosting future BSW cohorts.."

Portage College will continue to seek collaborative opportunities with other institutions to give students the opportunity to complete degrees within our region.

Portage College, Lac La Biche campus, successfully hosted the BSW third and fourth year from the U of C in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 academic years with more than 70 applicants for the 25 available seats.

"With such evidence of local demand, we are seeking additional University partners to deliver the BSW Program. This means looking outside of Alberta," said Guy Gervais, Associate Vice President Academic of Portage College.

We acknowledge that Portage College’s service region is on the traditional lands of First Nation Peoples, the owners of Treaty 6, 8 and 10, which are also homelands to the Métis people. We honour the history and culture of all people who first lived and gathered in these lands.
