Alberta Government's Commitment to Post-secondary Education

March 2, 2011

Thanks to the Alberta government's commitment to post-secondary education, Portage College will be receiving more than anticipated in its Campus Alberta Grant for 2011-2012.

The total amount of budget dollars to be received by the College is $21,481,563, which includes an additional $781,490 ongoing funding, specifically for infrastructure and regional stewardship activities.

As well, the College will receive $531,490 one time to assist with deferred maintenance projects identified to government through its 2010-2014 Business Plan.

Dr. Trent Keough, President of Portage College stated that this targeted funding is welcome news. The College has been working hard to update its facilities and grow in its communities.

Regarding the budget, the new Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, the Honourable Greg Weadick said, " While we have seen some modest economic recovery, we're not out of the woods yet. (However) our government is still keeping our sites on the future. We are maintaining our investment in post-secondary education and the knowledge-based economy."

In total, the Advanced Education and Technology budget is $3 billion. This represents more than $2.4 billion for post-secondary and community education.

Along with adjustments to institution budgets, in the fall there will be targeted funding available for post-secondary institutions with enrolment pressures. Funding may also be  made available to fund special projects such as the development of e-books.

Other news included statements about the student loan remission program that will be reworked to encourage students to complete their programs, allowing students to keep their debt levels manageable.
