High Carbon Monoxide Emission Levels Force Closing of Portage College Cold Lake Campus
This morning, unacceptable levels of carbon monoxide have forced the evacuation of the Portage College campus in Cold Lake. "The campus is located in the Energy Centre complex and the entire complex (other than the high school) is being evacuated," said Karen Hibbs, Director of Infrastructure and Information Technology at Portage College. Acceptable levels are 15 parts per million. The actual level at the campus is 22 parts per million.
No injuries were reported as a result.
When the problem was detected, Hibbs contacted a mechanical company to test the air systems in the college. It was discovered that a malfunctioning plate in one of the boilers at the Energy Centre was the cause of the high levels of carbon monoxide.
Both day and evening classes are cancelled for Portage students today, and the campus will re-open to staff and students tomorrow morning. For up-to-date information on this event, please check the Portage College website at www.portagecollege.ca
