PORTAGE COLLEGE GOLF TOURNAMENT SCORES WITH TOTAL REVENUE OF MORE THAN $50,000

Combining the revenue from generous sponsorships and profits from the 11th annual golf tournament,  Portage College can boast total revenues of approximately $50,000 from the sold out event held at the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club on Friday, August 26.

Portage College's annual fundraising golf tournament has always enjoyed the support of local businesses and of large companies conducting business in the area.  This year, local company Crude Energy Services took the position of Tournament Sponsor for the third consecutive year. In addition to Crude Energy Services, Devon Canada Corporation and Statoil  returned as sponsors. MEG Energy sponsored the Million Dollar Shoot Out-an exciting attempt for six players, but unfortunately with no one becoming a millionaire!

Hospitality sponsors included Crude Energy Services and Swamp Cats Limited. Bottled water was courtesy of Old Trail Country and tees were supplied by Nexen.  This year's tournament was supported by 28 hole sponsors. Several companies and individuals also donated fabulous prizes to add to the excitement of the event.

Golfers were also given an opportunity to tour the new state-of-the-art mobile training simulator for the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) program at Portage. The unit consists of 12 simulators and is completely self-contained in a reefer trailer. Being completely self powered with its own generator, the unit can travel anywhere, anytime to provide a learning environment for students. Thanks to the unit's portability, the college was able to set up for tours right on the parking lot of the golf course.

"We want to get the unit out to the schools and work sites ... and give people the opportunity to explore what it's like to be an HEO without having to plunk down big dollars," said Dr. Trent Keough, President of Portage College.

Known as the "Hair Raising Event, " all net proceeds from the golf tournament will go to support the College's new hairstyling program. The 38-week program will give students 1,400 hours of instruction in a salon environment for a fraction of the cost of other professional schools.

"We believe we have the responsibility to provide inexpensive and accessible education for our students so they can meet their career goals," said Keough. "This program helps us continue to do that."

In a large part, the success of the Lac La Biche event is due to the willingness and hard work of the many volunteers who participated, said Dr. Keough. "They ensured that the event ran smoothly and made our guests feel welcome and appreciated. We're most fortunate to have such a dedicated group of employees and community members who believe in the success of the college."
