Portage College is the first teaching institute in the world to put to use a new welding technology employing a new pre-heat and bake out system, exemplifying why Portage College is first choice for many Trades and Technical students.
Bill Cuff and Colin Regan from Hot Coils were on hand October 12, 2010 to donate a revolutionary new product called "Hot Coil" to Portage College. The new Wabamun, Alberta-based company has designed a product that can heat pipe to the most stringent welding specifications and procedures using 110/120 volt power without the use of an unsafe open flame. And they have selected Portage College to showcase their new product.
This innovative product will be utilized by the Steamfitter-Pipefitter department, as well as the Welding and Power Engineering programs at both the Lac La Biche and Cold Lake campuses, and is a great example of industry recognizing and supporting the College's Trades and Technical programs.
"These types of partnerships are essential to training institutes and to industry. Hot Coils has the opportunity to showcase their product to the next generation of tradesmen and Portage College retains the ability to stay on the cutting edge of industry trends and developments. Everyone benefits here and it's always nice to be first," commented Vern Yackimec, Dean of Trades and Technologies at Portage College.
Hot Coils offer a new, safer more efficient and cost effective way to pre-heat pipe prior to welding.
The compact ceramic heating coil may be quickly installed at the joint to be welded, its rapid heating element bringing the pipe to a uniform 550 degrees F (286 degrees C) within minutes. The coils' adjustable thermostat can accurately hold whatever temperature is set, to within plus or minus 2.5 degrees. Because the Hot Coil is lightweight and easy to handle, specialized set up crews are not required, resulting in time and money saved. Designed to handle a variety of applications, Hot Coils are available to fit standard 4", 6", 8", 10' and 12" pipe.
Hot Coils specialize in metallurgy, and construction and manufacturing, with experience in oil, gas and pulp industries, water treatment, hydroelectric and nuclear power plants.
