Program Description
This 35-week program prepares students for immediate employment in entry-level accounting positions in government, business and industry. Students will learn the most current software applications used in the workplace, including extensive training in Microsoft Office Suite. Training is provided in manual and computerized accounting, communications and financial math. Instruction in accounting projects and basic management principles are emphasized along with the development of basic office skills in reception duties, filing and handling of mail. A three-week practicum allows students to apply their knowledge working for a local business while gaining valuable on-the-job training and experience for their resume.

Admission Requirements
Grade 11 with English 20-1 or 20-2 (20 or 23), Math 20-1 or 20-2, Math 20 (Applied or Pure), Math 20 or 23 OR successful completion of basic skills test (Nelson Denny and Business Math). Career Potential
Graduates of the program will be able to perform entry-level functions in accounting or administration in business, industry and government. Job titles include Accounts Receivable/Payable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Accounting Technician and Accounting Clerk. Graduates have been hired in the tourism industry, health, education and social services fields, band or settlement offices, retail businesses, and oil and gas industries.
Transferability
Courses are accepted by the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB) within the CIB professional development program.

Students will obtain a sound working knowledge of a current computerized accounting package by completing workbook exercises in Simply Accounting. Modules in this package will incorporate accounting simulations which are very similar to real life experiences of entering transactions and preparing various financial reports in an accounting office. Manual projects such as using the calculator and a full cycle accounting project will also be carried out.

Within the conceptual framework of accounting, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, students are introduced to the accounting equation and the effect various transactions have on it. An introduction to ledgers, trial balances, the income statement, and balance sheet are presented. The accounting cycle, accounting for merchandise operations, internal control, controlling cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and inventories are introduced and examined individually. Students complete in-class assignments to ensure their understanding of the above concepts.

Capital assets are discussed with reference to recording acquisition cost, amortization, exchanges and disposal. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are examined through-out the course, as they relate to the specific subject areas. As a final integration, the student will study the analysis of financial statements.
