Prehospital Care Programs
Are you interested in helping people and making a difference in someone's life? Do you want a challenging and rewarding career? You should consider a career in the Emergency Medical Services field. EMS personnel provide emergency medical care and transport for the sick and injured.
In Alberta there are three tiers of emergency medical personnel: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance (EMT) and Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic (EMT-P).
Personnel in all three tiers; assess the extent of injuries and illness; perform history taking; perform and interpret diagnostic procedures; perform pre-hospital emergency care and safe transportation to medical facilities.
Emergency Medical Responder
The Emergency Medical Responder program is designed to provide entry level training for individuals wishing to start a career in the Emergency Medical Services field. The format of the Portage College EMR program offers individuals a unique alternative to traditional fulltime learning by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer mediated delivery format. The program includes training in emergency medical treatment as outlined in the Alberta Occupancy Competency Profile (AOCP) at the EMR level. The EMR program is a pre-requisite for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program.
