The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program is designed to provide entry level pre-hospital training for individuals wishing to start a career in emergency medical services (EMS). The format of the Portage College EMR program offers individuals a unique alternative to traditional full-time on-campus programs by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format so students can remain in their home communities for the majority of the training period. Students attend a 3 day (Friday-Sunday) on-site orientation followed by 8 weeks of online learning. During those 8 weeks students will attend 3 more weekend sessions. The final weekend will be the testing weekend. The program includes - training in pharmacology, glucometric testing, Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) management, traction splints, Nasal Pharyngeal Airway and pulse oximetry as per the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile. Under the Alberta Ambulance Services Act, registration as an EMR is the minimum level of training required to work on an ambulance.

Successful completion of the EMR program will allow graduates to work in entry-level EMS positions. Registration as an EMR is a pre-requisite for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. Portage College's EMR program is also recognized as an equivalent to entry-level ambulance programs in NWT, Nunavut, and the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Many volunteer and full-time fire departments require their members to have EMR training.
