Prehospital Care Programs
Are you interested in helping people and making a difference in someone's life? Do you want a challenging and rewarding career? You should consider a career in the Emergency Medical Services field. EMS personnel provide emergency medical care and transport for the sick and injured.
In Alberta there are three tiers of emergency medical personnel: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance (EMT) and Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic (EMT-P).
Personnel in all three tiers; assess the extent of injuries and illness; perform history taking; perform and interpret diagnostic procedures; perform pre-hospital emergency care and safe transportation to medical facilities.
Emergency Medical Technician
At Portage College our CMA (Canadian Medical Association) accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides students to learn in two different formats. The first format is a traditional full time face to face program consisting of 10 weeks onsite and 2 field placements, hospital 36 hours and ambulance 240 hours. The second format is an outreach model where the student will have 8 mandatory onsite weeks over a 37 week period which includes field placements. Both models follow the AOCP (Alberta Occupancy Competency Profile) and NOCP (National Occupancy Competency Profile) for the EMT or PCP (Primary Care Paramedic) level. The EMT program is a prerequisite for the Paramedic/ACP program.Click on the link below for details about this program
