Prehospital Care Programs
Are you interested in helping people and making a difference in someone's life? Do you want a challenging and rewarding career? You should consider a career in the Emergency Medical Services field. EMS personnel provide emergency medical care and transport for the sick and injured.
In Alberta there are three tiers of emergency medical personnel: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance (EMT) and Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic (EMT-P).
Personnel in all three tiers; assess the extent of injuries and illness; perform history taking; perform and interpret diagnostic procedures; perform pre-hospital emergency care and safe transportation to medical facilities.
Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic (EMT-P)
At Portage College our CMA (Canadian Medical Association) accredited Paramedic program allows EMT's an alternative to the traditional full time onsite program, by providing multi-modal instruction. The program is in a computer mediated delivery format so students can remain working and gaining experience throughout most of the program. The student attends 10 mandatory onsite weeks in addition to 3 practicum rotations during the 2 years of training. The first initial ambulance practicum starts at the beginning of year 2 and is 384 hours in duration, the hospital practicum is 270 hours in duration and the final ambulance practicum is 576 hours in duration. The Portage College Paramedic Program and follows the AOCP (Alberta Occupancy Competency Profile) and NOCP (National Occupancy Competency Profile) for the EMT-P or ACP (Advanced Care Paramedic) level.
On-site training is conducted at the Lac La Biche Campus
