Program Description
The Physical Wellness and Youth Leadership courses are designed for individuals who wish to work within communities to promote health and well-being through fitness, health promotion, health education and community development. The main focus is improving health and wellness conditions in communities, including helping communities tailor services to fit their individual needs, developing preventive health solutions and emphasizing the value of leadership and citizenship training.

Completion of Grade 12. High school transcripts or letter of support from an employer , if applicable. Criminal Record Check, signed Criminal Record Check Wainver form, up-to-date immunization, one page essay outlining student's background and career objectives relating to program. Students who successfully complete these courses develop skills and knowledge applicable to employment in Aboriginal and non Aboriginal communities in the areas of fitness and recreation as support workers, leaders and trainers in the areas of health and wellness programming, community development initiatives, sports and recreation programming and youth development programs.

This course will provide instruction based on the Alberta fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA) resistance Training Leader specialty program. Course topics include techniques and precautions, exercise analysis, anatomy, program design, safety considerations, training methods, nutrition and drugs, and resistance training with women, older adults, youth and athlete considerations and needs. Students will learn skills in leading weight room orientations, group circuit training classes, and monitoring fitness facilities. A variety of fitness trends will be explored through the examination of industry professionals and participation in fitness programs. A Resistance Training Specialty through the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association can be obtained through the completion of this course.
