This program is designed for persons who are seeking entrance or progression in the power engineering field. Power Engineers are skilled workers who operate and maintain equipment in a power plant. Power Engineers work with internal combustion engines, steam and gas turbines, pumps, air-conditioning units, building heating systems, and steam and hot water boilers providing utilities such as heat, climate control and electrical power for industrial processes or building operations. The Alberta Boilers Safety Association will issue a 4th, 3rd 2nd and 1st class Interprovincial Power Engineer’s Certificate to a person who: 1. meets the prerequisites set forth in the Power Engineer’s Regulations under the Alberta Safety Codes Act, and 2. passes the Alberta Boiler’s Safety Association administered examinations. A student seeking proper training will enter into this field beginning at the 4th class level, then progress into the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st class levels respectively.
Certificate
Grade 12 diploma with minimum of 65% in English 10 or 13, Math 10C, 10-3, 10 or 13 or Math 10 (Applied or Pure) and Physics 10 or Science 10, high school transcript, high school diploma and/or GED certificate. Please refer to the following link for minimum technical requirements at our Moodle Site.

A student with the appropriate training in the power engineering field and possesses a valid power engineering certificate may find career opportunities in the oil and gas industries, electrical utilities companies, chemical processing plants, pulp and paper industries, and building operations.
Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to write Part “A” and “B” of the Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineering exams. Students obtaining a 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate may progress to 3rd Class Power Engineering training offered at Portage College Lac La Biche. Please check the current Alberta Power Engineer’s Regulation under the Safety Codes Act for further information.
