Program Description
This unique nursing education program delivered from a rural perspective prepares students to meet the competencies required to enter the exciting, dynamic profession of Practical Nursing. Our program is centered on the McGill Model of nursing, which emphasizes collaboration, health promotion and family-centered nursing. The program equips students with the skills and knowledge required to work in a wide variety of health care settings, both rural and urban. Graduates are eligible to write the national licensing examination administered through the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta. Our enthusiastic, experienced instructors incorporate individual learning needs and imaginative, innovative classroom and lab experiences.

Admission Requirements
Completion of Year 1 nursing courses. Students must provide new criminal record check prior to clinical practicums. Please refer to the following link for minimum technical requirements at our Moodle Site.

Career Potential
Graduates will be eligible for jobs in acute care hospitals, continuing care centers, community care settings, client homes, or doctor’s offices. Practical Nurses earn approximately $23.73-$31.07 per hour.
Transferability
Diploma will be considered for admission to Bachelor of Applied Human Service Administration program at Grant MacEwan University.

This course focuses on applying the McGill Model of Nursing and nursing care to clients and their families within acute care situations. Medical-surgical nursing care and related skills pertinent to acute care hospitalization are included. The theoretical components include client teaching, nursing diagnoses, discharge planning, health promotion, disease prevention and working as part of the health care team. Both classroom and lab practice are included in this course. This course will prepare students for practice in acute care settings.

Students will be required to integrate knowledge from all previous courses. This course will help students develop the knowledge and skills required to provide care to developing families. Students may choose to include maternity nursing as a practical component of their focused practicum.

This course provides an opportunity for students to obtain practical experience in a specific area of nursing while utilizing the McGill Model of Nursing. Choices include one of the following: mental health, maternity, pediatrics or community health. This course combines clinical practice and observation. The student will be expected to integrate knowledge from all previous courses into clinical practice. This course assists students increase their knowledge about specialized areas of nursing and integrate knowledge learned in the classroom setting. Each student is assigned to a preceptor, an experienced LPN, RPN or RN in the practicum.

This course provides students with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical thinking skills acquired throughout the program into nursing practice. In addition, students will increase their understanding of the role of a Licensed Practical Nurse as they develop time management skills and ability to coordinate care for an increasing number of patients. In order to facilitate their transition to the role of a graduate Practical Nurse, students will be paired with a LPN or RN preceptor in a clinical area. Students will indicate their choice of setting for this practicum. Every effort will be made to accommodate their request. Students will be expected to apply theory in their clinical practice. This course helps students prepare to fill the role of a Graduate Practical Nurse.
