Portage College and CodeCore College are undertaking a groundbreaking partnership between the private and public institutions. Starting this summer, CodeCore, located in New Westminster, British Columbia, will offer Portage College’s Business Administration program. This first of a kind partnership for Portage College means CodeCore College will act as an official campus for Portage. This is Portage’s first campus outside of Alberta. CodeCore students will now be able to participate in the Portage Business program and earn a specialized diploma in accounting or management. Furthermore, CodeCore recruits students from all over the world and their international students will be eligible for all the benefits of a 2 year public College diploma.
Partnering with other institutions is nothing new for the Portage College Business department. What is new is partnering with an institution outside of Alberta. Bev Lockett, Dean of Hospitality at Portage College, is relishing the opportunity to provide quality education to more students, particularly those from outside Canada.
“We are really excited about this new collaboration with CodeCore,” she said. “Portage is a destination for students looking for quality programs that help make them job-ready. We look forward to future collaborations with CodeCore so that more international students can access quality programs and help strengthen communities across our two provinces.”
In April 2021 Alberta Advanced Education released Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs, a 10-year strategy for post-secondary education which includes a goal to strengthen internationalization. For Portage, the partnership represents an opportunity for more students from around the world to take College programs, something Portage will be further pursuing more aggressively in the months to come.
“Portage College is excited to have found a partner in CodeCore who can assist by providing access to our programs for international students,” said Nancy Broadbent, President and CEO of Portage College. “As the College strives to meet the priorities identified within Advanced Education’s Alberta 2030 vision, we need to be serving a broader international student market.”
CodeCore College is known for its technology programs, particularly for pioneering programs in Web Development on the west coast of Canada. Partnering with Portage is a natural step in continuing that innovative spirit, according to CodeCore Campus Director Ian McKinnon.
“CodeCore is very lucky to have such an amazing partner in Portage College,” he said. “Portage has some really strong, well-established programs. This step really shows the vision of the leadership there.”
