Business Program Success Story

May 28, 2018

Samantha Walker-Dean, mother of 4, from Cold Lake had a dream.

Samantha did not have her Grade 12, but knew she wanted to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). Portage College helped get her there.

"I love a challenge!" Samantha was inspired by none other than Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield.

"He spoke about wanting to become an astronaut, but admitted that such a big huge goal seemed unattainable, so he broke his journey into small steps and achievements. And that's exactly what I did!"

Samantha completed her Grade 11 and 12 Math, and with guidance from Portage College student advisors - enrolled in Business Administration. She earned a Business Administration Diploma in Accounting which led to her acceptance at NAIT. Once Samantha attains her degree in accounting from NAIT she will apply for the CPA Professional Education Program.

"I could not have come this far without the support of my instructors at Portage College. Class size was a huge plus! I was never just a number - I was Sammy. We had more opportunities to ask questions, contribute to discussions, get to know our instructors, and have them get to know us. It was clear our instructors communicated to have their courses compliment each other. Portage College instructors helped me design the future I was looking for. My husband and 4 children were extremely supportive and each one shared in my journey. When I was starting college my youngest was starting kindergarten. And when I graduate college, my oldest will graduate high school."
