ABOUT THE POSITION

Portage College is seeking an Indigenous Learners Project Lead to support student success across its seven campuses. Reporting to the Vice President, People and Culture, this role will identify service gaps, promote existing supports, and help build a community-based learner support inventory. The Project Lead will work closely with First Nations, Métis Settlements, and community partners to understand the unique needs of Indigenous learners. They will also explore funding opportunities and contribute to the development of wraparound services that reflect the College’s commitment to reconciliation, inclusion, and long-term student success. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with college, community leaders, and service providers to develop strategies that address service gaps and strengthen student support.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, service providers, and educational stakeholders to enhance collaboration and support for student success.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of wraparound services available to students in Northeastern Alberta communities.
  • Partner with local organizations, governments, and educational entities to expand and enhance the scope and reach of student support services.
  • Identify and document community resources, services, and initiatives that may contribute to student success.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities to secure funding for expanding or enhancing community-based student support services.
  • Prepare regular updates and reports on the progress of gap assessments, community service mapping and grant opportunities
  • Prepare and present findings on gaps and solutions in a report to community partners and the college.

 QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree or diploma in education, social services, community development, or related field with relevant experience.
  • Minimum two years working with diverse communities, preferably in education.
  • Strong understanding of challenges faced by students in remote/rural communities.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding is an asset.
  • Established credibility in Indigenous communities and education sectors.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous issues in Alberta, including impacts on student support and recruitment.
  • Direct experience working with Indigenous Peoples in education.
  • Strong writing, public speaking, and MS Office skills.
  • Post-secondary degree/diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a police information check that meets with the satisfaction of the College.
