Culture on Campus & in the Classroom Poster

More About the Sessions:

Morning Session (9 AM to 12 PM): "Culture on Campus: The What and the Why" - This session is designed for all college staff and will focus on integrating intercultural awareness across our college community.

In this session we will consider how demographic shifts and trends in higher education have created complexity.  Participants will gain insight into why many institutions have focused on intercultural understanding as foundational to both the internationalization of higher education and our responsibilities to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. Collectively we will explore what intercultural learning means and how diversity impacts learning and teaching outcomes.  We will explore how cultural values and preferences impact communication preferences that can lead to additional challenges.

Afternoon Session (1 PM to 4 PM): "Culture in the Classroom: Exploring Expectations, Assumptions, and Opportunities" - This session will delve into the dynamics of intercultural understanding within the classroom setting.

In this session we will consider how the rapid increase in international students present both challenges and opportunities. We will explore trends in the labour force and what employers are looking for in graduates and how acceptance and adaptation can benefit all students. We will identify the challenges and opportunities of multicultural groupwork as skills essential for career success.  We will discuss how diverse sociocultural identities shape expectations and assumptions for both learners and educators and consider Intercultural Teaching Competencies (Dimitrov & Haque) for reflective practice.

There is no fee to register.
