Lyla Allan, a Community Social Work faculty member and Portage College employee, recently received the 2014 Women of Influence Award for her community volunteerism. The Cold Lake Women of Influence event is a celebration of International Women's Day to honor the various ways that women enhance and invigorate the Cold Lake Community. Allan, has been with Portage College for more than 13 years and her co-workers are extremely proud of her achievements.
"She has dedicated her career to helping Portage College students, but it doesn't end there, Lyla spends an enormous amount of time volunteering both at the College and in the community," said Guy Gervais, Dean of Business, University Studies and Social Work.
Allan's many volunteer activities include serving on the board of directors for the Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Advisory Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as well as participating in various charity walks/runs, Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Campaign, and the Males in Crisis Committee. These are impressive contributions but what really stood out was her commitment to her students at Portage College.
"Lyla is always there to give support and encouragement to all, she is an inspiration. She makes every day a little brighter," said one of the nominators.
Another nominator stated, "She has inspired me to finish my diploma in Social Work in which I succeeded in doing."
"I try to be a good role model for my students, they often ask me how I find the time to do what I do, and I always tell them when you enjoy doing something that gives you pleasure, you'll find the time," Allan said.
The College is proud to have such distinguished and valuable employees to mentor and teach students across Alberta.
"I'm honored to have received this award, but I have to say it wouldn't be possible without the support of my family, friends, students as well as my work colleagues," said Allan.
