St. Paul Campus Continues Clean up After Crash
March 25, 2014

College maintenance staff, along with air quality contractors, have completed initial clean-up of Portage College's St. Paul campus after a vehicle crashed through the wall early on Friday morning.  Initial insurance investigations are underway to repair the damaged wall. Structural engineering services will also be required to assess the damage done to the building.

"We want to have an engineer take a look at the damage and assess the cracks that have stretched further than the impact," said Karen Hibbs, Director of Infrastructure and Information Technology at Portage College. "Our biggest concern is getting this facility repaired as safely as possible, and we'll take all necessary precautions to make sure that happens."

The southwest entrance of the building will remain closed while the contractors work on closing the hole.  The main street entrance will be the only point of entry until further notice.

Contractors took air-monitoring samples back to Edmonton for analysis. The College received confirmation late on Sunday night that the results indicated a safe level of vermiculite fibers, allowing full occupancy of the space.

"We have secured the scene at the St. Paul campus, and we're hopeful that the insurance adjusters will arrange to fix the wall quickly," said Dr. Trent Keough, CEO and President of Portage College.

All classes have resumed and staff and students have returned to work at St. Paul campus.
