This March 24 is the fifth annual Whistleblower Awareness Day, which reminds us of the vital role whistleblowers play in strengthening our public institutions. Reporting workplace wrongdoing brings to light matters that an employee believes may be unlawful, dangerous or harmful to the public interest. To increase the likelihood of disclosures, it’s important that people feel that they can express themselves without fear. The Alberta Public Interest Commissioner is dedicated to protecting people who report serious wrongdoing in the public sector. Under the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act, the Commissioner conducts independent, impartial investigations into allegations of wrongdoing and complaints of reprisal.
