ABOUT THE POSITION
Portage College has an exciting opportunity for a Dean, Trades and Technologies. Reporting to the Vice President, Academic and Research, the Dean provides leadership in the development, delivery, and evaluation of Trade programs, with a focus on quality, relevance, and student success.
The role works closely with industry, Indigenous communities, government, and educational partners to ensure programs meet current and emerging needs. As a member of Deans’ Council, the Dean also supports strategic initiatives and mentors academic leaders across the College.
Some of the responsibilities include:
- Provide academic and administrative leadership to the program coordinators, faculty and administrative support staff ensuring that programs meet the needs of our diverse student body.
- Oversee the management, preparation and analysis of budgets and financial forecasts and reports.
- Maintain the quality, academic integrity and feasibility of all programs offered by the Faculty through the review of curriculum against emerging industry trends, professional standards and accreditation expectations as well as the development of new program initiatives to address the long-term skills and competency needs of students as entry-level professionals.
- Collaborate with area school divisions to develop articulation and dual credit courses to create seamless high school to college transition for students.
- Work with the Registrar’s office to maintain existing transfer agreements and negotiate new transfer agreements on College programs and courses with other post-secondary institutions within and outside of Alberta.
- Manage a unionized professional team, the incumbent must be able to function within the context of collective agreements and promote an environment of mutual respect, fairness and equity.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and to building high performance teams focused on quality and value for students.
- Manage change in an inclusive and collaborative manner to achieve specific academic objectives, enrollment targets and quality goals.
- The incumbent must be able to use a wide range of conflict resolution processes for handling disputes involving faculty, staff and/or students.
- Analyze business opportunities prioritizing them according to their potential for increasing revenues and profitability in support of the College’s strategic plan.
- Develop, direct and negotiate a wide range of contracts and programs through the establishment of strategic alliances and partnerships with federal, provincial and municipal governments, community agencies and other colleges.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth in understanding the issues facing program areas and impact to curriculum delivery.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A Masters’ degree in a relevant discipline or Red Seal Journeyperson certification.
- A solid understanding of Alberta’s post-secondary education system, including experience liaising with government and other institutions.
- Ability to write proposals and grant applications.
- A minimum of five years in a management position.
- A solid understanding of Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training regulations and processes.
- Experience leading complex projects from planning to completion, with strong project management or research background.
- Budget management experience and a demonstrated ability to support program and business strategies through financially sound business plans.
- A collaborative leadership style with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- A generalist mindset with a breadth of knowledge across multiple fields, contributing to innovative problem-solving.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities and a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures and organizations.
- Previous experience in a post-secondary environment, preferably at the college or university level.
- Experience working and managing a unionized environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to contribute to a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
