NRES 108 – Field Botany (Fall 2025)
The conservation and management of boreal ecosystems rely on a solid understanding of native plant communities and their ecological roles. This course focuses on the identification and classification of key plant groups in Alberta’s boreal forest, including trees, shrubs, forbs, graminoids, bryophytes, and lichens, with an emphasis on family-level characteristics and diagnostic features. Students will gain foundational knowledge in plant structure, function, and botanical terminology. Field and lab work will build practical skills in plant identification and survey methods for use in ecological and resource management careers.

NRES 115 – Fisheries (Winter 2026)
The conservation and management of fish resources depend on a comprehensive understanding of fish ecology and habitat requirements, which vary significantly across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, as well as between lotic and lentic systems. This course aims to provide practical field experience and academic skills essential for careers in fish culture, habitat and stock assessment, fisheries enhancement, conservation, management, and research. Techniques covered will include passive and active sampling, age estimation through the analysis of cartilaginous structures, health assessment techniques, stream assessment protocols, considerations for Species at Risk, creel survey data collection, and sport and commercial fishery regulations. Field research will be integral, allowing students to collect fisheries data for scientific reports.
